After retiring early from teaching, Rosemarie Carruthers, B.A., B.Ed. was ready for a new challenge. Having cared for her many students and her own children over the years, Rosemarie felt it was time to follow a life-long desire to work with animals. About the same time as Rosemarie retired, she adopted a six year old Lab/Husky dog named Montana. Montana had some major physical and behavioural issues. Rosemarie decided to blend both their needs into a new career, so off to Integrated Touch, Inc. in Ohio they both went to study Animal Massage Therapy.

Rosemarie, Certified Animal Massage Practitioner, carries out the skills which she has learned in a very professional and compassionate manner. She brings many years of experience in animal care to her profession and always treats each animal as the unique creature that it is.

As animal massage is a relatively new field in the Niagara Region, Rosemarie's major goal is to provide education to the public regarding the profound benefits of massage to our companion animals' lives. We live in a very stressful society where people and animals experience the same levels of stress. In the exact way that humans can benefit from massage therapy, our animals can reap similar benefits.

Rosemarie has shown great initiative in researching methods of improving companion animals' lives. Rosemarie's inquisitive and outgoing nature captivates the admiration and trust of both human and non-human creature alike. Her vast experience with all manner of animals makes her a natural for continued success in this caring profession. Rosemarie considers it a privilege that she is able to help animals live meaningful and healthy lives. Clients have told Rosemarie that when their pets are being massaged, they relax and feel peaceful at the same time. This is the essence of what Rosemarie has chosen as her motto, "A gentle touch that means so much!"

In addition to animal massage to improve her clients' lives, Rosemarie also assists both caregiver and companion animal during the pet's final passage. Rosemarie volunteers her time and expertise, when requested by the animal's caregiver or veterinarian, to attend, along with the caregiver, at the final visit to the veterinarian. During this special time, Rosemarie comforts the caregiver with her calm presence while gently massaging the animal. Rosemarie counsels the caregiver to speak to their beloved animal at this time thanking them for the blessing they have been in their lives.

Rosemarie approaches both animal and human with respect and states that she never forces a massage on an animal. At the beginning of any new client's massage, Rosemarie asks the caregiver to fill out an information sheet relating to the animal's health history. Rosemarie uses the information to plot progress over continued sessions. At the end of each session, both the animal and caregiver are thanked and a small gift is given to the animal client.

Rosemarie offers special presentation gift certificates packaged as a "Massage in a Bottle" In each tiny bottle, Rosemarie places a rolled-up scroll gift certificate surrounded by colourful confetti shaped like stars because this is exactly what each of her animal clients is - a star. Customers have been most welcoming of these gift presentation bottles. Rosemarie frequently donates one of these "Massage in a Bottle" gifts to charities seeking to raise funds.

Rosemarie has received many positive testimonials from pleased clients. These testimonials speak very highly of her professional and caring service to the animals under her care. Some excerpts from these testimonials are:
